body — Bliss Body, body-coinages, the body as ecosystem

The body is the workshop. Across roughly a decade Colin coins bodies
the way he coins animals: by collision and qualification — bliss body,
subtle body, shiva body, diamond body, comfort body, golden body,
manipulative squid bodies in your body. Where animals belong to
animal coinages — absurdist creature collisions and water belongs to water — submerged ecosystems, pools, rain, the fluid register,
the body is the containing register underneath both: the ocean that has
the fish in it (bodyocean), the room the brain operates from
(Ecosy(stem) Brain(stem)), the camera-bristling vessel of cameras in my
body.

The motif spans the full arc of the catalog — earliest archive folders
(07_08 [_], comfort body, bodyocean) through the polished Killd By
albums (Recovery’s cameras in my body, Court Clothes’ river_inside,
the 2016 EP literally titled draw blood) — and persists past Colin’s
own life into the Bliss Body memorial event in 2018. The same two-word
title travels: bliss body appears as alphabets album track (BESTUV09
2009; NOV09 2009), then resurfaces as the title of a 2015 video project
(_Documentation/_Creative Assets/Images and Video Assets/1 Bliss Body/),
and finally as the title Laura Conway gave the 2018 tribute show at Black
Cube. No other motif in this vault is documented carrying a single
phrase across album → film → memorial.

Tracks / coinages (selection)

Bliss Body — the title that travels

The single phrase recurs across three project surfaces and three different
years:

  • alphabets/BESTUV09/15 bliss body.mp3 — first surface, 2009.
  • alphabets/NOV09/08 bliss body.mp3 — same year, possibly a take or
    reframe.
  • _Documentation/_Creative Assets/Images and Video Assets/1 Bliss Body/
    — 2015 video project; finished files include Bliss Body FINAL.mp4 and
    BLISS BODY FINAL 021018.mov. The 021018 timestamp on the second file
    is February 10, 2018 — within days of Colin’s death (1 Feb 2018);
    someone (Colin, or family/collaborators in the immediate aftermath)
    appears to have rendered a final cut at that moment. Worth a more
    careful look in a future session when emotional bandwidth is right.
  • [[events/bliss-body-tribute-2018|Bliss Body: A tribute to Colin Ward]] — Laura Conway’s tribute show at
    Black Cube, 2018. The phrase becomes the title of the memorial.

This is the strongest single piece of evidence in the vault that Colin’s
title-coining vocabulary was load-bearing for how the people around him
understood and grieved him. The phrase is his (alphabets 2009); it
survives him.

Body-coinages — body + qualifier

The signature pattern: a quality-noun grafts onto “body” to form a
new psychic-physical category.

Killd By era — body lands on polished records

The motif survives the alphabets → Killd By transition fully intact:

    mattered to him.

    flanking the album’s late side.
  • [[releases/killd-by-court-clothes|Court Clothes]] (Sep 2015), track
    13: river_inside — body as interior water (cf. water — submerged ecosystems, pools, rain, the fluid register).
  • [[releases/killd-by-draw-blood|draw blood]] — entire 2016 EP titled
    for body fluid. The naming move that says: this whole release is of
    the body. Pre-release archive variant: bandcamp/killd by__NA/NA - draw blood.mp3.

Body parts — the inventory

When Colin breaks the body apart, he goes piece by piece — bones, blood,
heart, brain, face, mouth, throat, neck, jaw, lung, gut, spine, fingers,
toe-nails, eye, feet — and treats each as its own coinage host.

Reading

Five operations Colin reliably runs on the body:

  1. Body-coinage by qualifier. Bliss / subtle / shiva / diamond /
    comfort / golden / camera body.     The two-word formula is the most
    productive: a noun-or-adjective laminates onto “body” and a new psychic
    category appears. The strongest of these (bliss body) exits the
    catalog and becomes the title of his memorial.
  2. Body as ecosystem / interior territory. Ecosy(stem) Brain(stem),
    bodyocean, river_inside, brain waves dance hall, cameras in my body,
    manipulative squid bodies in your body.     The body contains scenes,
    weather, animals, technology. This is the operation that binds the
    body motif to water — submerged ecosystems, pools, rain, the fluid register (interior fluid) and
    animal coinages — absurdist creature collisions (interior animals).
  3. Body-part inventory as world-building tool. Bones become gems;
    bones become cosmology; bones become lullabies. Eyes become portals.
    Feet become spots. Each body part is treated as a discrete coinage
    host — the body is not one thing but a kit of parts each capable of
    sustaining its own coinage line.
  4. Bodily-fluid register as Killd By’s mature mode. draw blood
    (2016 EP), cameras in my body (Recovery 2015), river_inside
    (Court Clothes 2015), sweat (back to alphabets era). The Killd By
    project narrows the broader alphabets body-coinage practice into a
    tighter blood/sweat/water-inside-the-body register. The polish reduces
    the absurdism but keeps the operation.
  5. Body in motion as percussive engine. hopdanceshakebump,
    shakeshakeshakeshakeshake, pumpbounze    . The body becomes the
    metronome. Often paired with explicit BPM tags (100BPM_B_PUMPBOUNZE,
    160BPM_B_PUMPBOUNCE, 200BPM_B_PUMPBOUNZE) — sonic and bodily speed
    are interchangeable.

The unifying logic: the body is whatever the song needs it to be — a
container for water, a workshop for coinages, a percussion section, a
cyborg surface, an inventory of removable parts — and the language for
all of these is the same titling technique that runs the rest of his
catalog.

Notes for future passes

  • Bliss Body’s three-surface persistence (album track 2009 → video
    project 2015 → memorial 2018) is one of the most narratively important
    facts in this vault. Worth a dedicated callout on the website’s colin
    page or as a sidebar to the memorial event entry. The detail that the
    finished video file’s render-date (021018 → 2018-02-10) sits days
    after Colin’s death is materially significant; treat with care and
    confirm with Dyl before publicly surfacing.
  • MARCH09hopdanceshakebump is a folder named in this register —
    Colin organized work under body-action coinages, not just titled
    individual tracks that way. Worth checking other folder names for the
    same pattern in a structural pass; it suggests the motif governs work
    organization, not only tracklist titling.
  • draw blood (2016 EP) is a candidate for its own dedicated release
    page expansion if not already deep — it’s the densest body-titled work
    on a finished record and the most explicit move the catalog makes into
    the bodily-fluid register.
  • The cameras in my body archive trail (3+ draft files in
    RcvryDrafts plus a CD-burn master) suggests this track was the most
    worked-over piece on Recovery. Worth comparing draft → final on a
    release page if a “tracks worked-over the most” angle ever surfaces for
    the website.
  • Cross-motif overlap is dense and intentional:
    • body × water = bodyocean, _river_inside_, brain waves
    • body × animal-coinage = manipulative squid bodies in your body,
      simbabodyfirstdraft, gembones
    • body × sweat = the entire SWEATBEE series + sweater wearing puns
    • body × cosmic-ghost = Subtle Body, shiva body, Our Bones Must Be the Colors of the Sun, ghost face stoned dork smile
    • body × dance/rave/groove (motif TBD) = hopdanceshakebump,
      shakeshakeshakeshakeshake, the BPM_PUMPBOUNZE family
      These overlaps argue that motifs in this vault are best read as
      co-located registers rather than disjoint categories — a future
      structural pass could surface a motif-overlap diagram for the website.
  • Sub-motifs not yet broken out that future passes might want:
    • bones as its own page (gembones, lullabones, collar bones, “Our
      Bones Must Be the Colors of the Sun”, “what about the bones_”),
    • face / surface (face is one of the most-coined parts: ghost face,
      primal face, balloon face, sur faces, cyborg emo wish face),
    • dance/rave/groove (called out as Session 13 carry-forward #7,
      still open).
