If water — submerged ecosystems, pools, rain, the fluid register is the wet substance and body — Bliss Body, body-coinages, the body as ecosystem is the
workshop and dance / rave / groove — the floor as a song-engine is the motor, then
machine/robot/cyber is the prosthesis — the not-quite-human voice
Colin gives the catalog when he wants the sound to feel processed,
arcade-cabinet-bright, or dystopian. It runs from the earliest archive
batch (07_08/Mirrors, Robotics, 2008) through the last named Killd By
release (DDR3:Loaner phone/04 danceMCHN, 2016), and it shifts vocabulary
across that arc: alphabets-era uses the prefix robo- and reads as
sci-fi-children’s-book; Killd By-era swaps robo- for cyber- and
reads as dystopian-urban. About 18 named files carry this register, plus a
visual cover anchor (18 alphabets/robot.png) and a production-stage
technique (bloodsweat&ice robovoicesamps).

The motif is the closest cousin to animal coinages — absurdist creature collisions — the
robo-X subsection of that page (robo goats, robodogs, dolphin robots,
robo whale, robo turtles, robo elephant, pterodactyls catching stars in
metal buckets) is also load-bearing here. The machine/robot motif extends
that subsection in two directions animal-coinage doesn’t reach: (1) the
machine without the animal — talk talk machines, beep beep computers, danceMCHN — and (2) the cyber register that emerges in
Killd By and never references an animal at all. Treat this page as the
machine-side complement to animal-coinage’s animal-side.

Three subregisters across the arc

1. Robo + animal (alphabets era, 2008–2010)

The densest cluster, and the one shared with animal coinages — absurdist creature collisions:

  • 07_08/robodogs on lawns.m4a — earliest robo- coinage in the archive
(2008). Note the title’s domestic-suburban setting (on lawns) — the
robot is given a banal address.
  • 07_08/Mirrors, Robotics.m4a — earliest robotics (vs. robo) form.
  • JANFEB09/robo elephant in trouble and on the run in some sort of chrome hallways.m4a — the longest title in the cluster; the animal-machine is
put inside an architectural register (chrome hallways) that prefigures
the cyberslum spatial framing seven years later.
  • underwaters II/robo whale growl swims.mp3 and
underwaters II/03 robo turtles party.mp3 — robo + sea creature.
  • underwaters V/03 dolphin robots.mp3 — note the inverted form (animal
first, then robot — the only major inversion in the cluster).
  • DEC09SCIFI/04 robodogs nighttime cage howls.mp3 — robodogs return,
now howling (overlap with howl / lust howls) inside a cage at night.
  • fantazia2010/15 robo goats howl and bang.mp3 — placed at track 15 of
the same Fantazia 2010 album that gives the dance/rave/groove motif its
    earliest event-coinage; howl + bang (drum-machine onomatopoeia)
bridges this motif with howl / lust howls.

The operation is consistent: take an animal Colin already cares about
(see animal coinages — absurdist creature collisions for the taxonomic-specificity rule), prefix
it with robo-, and let the animal’s existing behaviors (howling,
swimming, party-going, getting in trouble) keep happening. The robot
prefix doesn’t replace the animal — it costumes it.

2. Machine without animal (alphabets era → bridging release)

A smaller cluster where the machine is named directly, no animal:

  • fantazia2010/08 beep beep computers.mp3 and
    fantazia2010/09 talk talk machines.mp3 — back-to-back tracks 8 and 9
on Fantazia 2010. Reduplication-as-machine-voice: the machine is
given a doubled-syllable utterance (beep beep, talk talk) that
    parallels Colin’s body-action stacking on
dance / rave / groove — the floor as a song-engine (hopdanceshakebump) and his
reduplication titles (shakeshakeshakeshakeshake). The machine speaks
in the same percussive mode the body dances in.
  • 18 alphabets/robot.png — cover-art-level anchor (image, not track).
    The release titled 18 alphabets uses a robot as its visual identity;
the album-name itself is the alphabet system framed as a recurring
unit-set, which is a quietly machinic frame.
  • freakeasymix_NU-NU/danceMCHN.aif and
    M_killdby15:16:17/FREAKEASYMIX/danceMCHN.aif — the danceMCHN file
exists at multiple production stages across at least two project
folders (FREAKEASYMIX and a Killd By session folder), suggesting it
was a long-cooked piece rather than a one-off. The released form is
on DDR3:Loaner phone/04 danceMCHN (2016); the working files predate
    it (overlap with dance / rave / groove — the floor as a song-engine op #3 — game/arcade
    reference as floor-practice stand-in).

3. Cyber + space (Killd By era, 2015–2017)

The vocabulary shifts. Robo- drops out almost entirely; cyber- takes
its place; the modifier no longer attaches to an animal but to a
location:

  • KB/SLOW&CUT/cyberslum slow Cut.mp3 — the cyberslum surface in slow-
cut form; same naming family as bodyocean slow Cut etc. on
water — submerged ecosystems, pools, rain, the fluid register / body — Bliss Body, body-coinages, the body as ecosystem.
  • KB/172 RECOVERYWAV/GettingDown in the CyberSlum.wav — Recovery-era
draft; the cyberslum is a place you get down in (overlap with
    dance / rave / groove — the floor as a song-engine).
  • Lyrics and Notes/cyberslumlyrics.rtf and
Lyrics and Notes/cyber sLum take it back .rtf — two lyric files,
including a variant title take it back. The presence of dedicated
lyric files (rare in the catalog) indicates the cyberslum was a
    lyric-driven track, not a title-only construct — Killd By’s
bedroom-pop lyric register applied to a cyber-spatial setting.
(RTF reads completed Session 17, 2026-05-11 — retry resolved.)
Two distinct drafts: the cyberslumlyrics.rtf jammin / getting down
draft (opens “jammin / in the cyber slum again / tonight, cannot
    forget about you”
; cross-motif imagery across animal coinages — absurdist creature collisions
jaguar on the phone, water — submerged ecosystems, pools, rain, the fluid register deep in the amazon,
stars / ghosts / aliens / cosmic-spiritual satellite, plus a sharp political register
    capitalist poser fukboi / alone at the top of a pyramid bank);
and the cyber sLum take it back .rtf take it back draft (opens
“this is not air this is water”, with the reduplications
freeze. freeze. freeze. freeze. and take it back. / take it back.
giving the cyberslum lyric its mode of speech). The reduplication
finding from these RTFs is the 4th instance of Colin’s
    reduplication operation; documented on
    _Documentation/COLIN_OPERATIONS.md Operation 2.

This is the motif’s biggest era-shift: alphabets-era robos are
creatures; Killd By-era cybers are places. The animal-coinage engine
gets replaced by a city-as-slum engine.

4. Production-level robotization (Killd By era)

A boundary case that’s still motif-relevant:

  • M_killdby15:16:17/Killd By/RECOVERY/bloodsweat&ice robovoicesamps.aif
    and 2bloodsweat&ice robovoicesamps.aifrobovoicesamps is a
production technique label: Colin processed his vocals into robotic
samples on the Recovery-era track bloodsweat&ice. Cross-links to
sweat / sweatbee (the bloodsweat title), body — Bliss Body, body-coinages, the body as ecosystem (blood + sweat
    • ice as bodily-fluid register), and to the Killd By era’s general
drift toward processed-voice textures. The robot is no longer in the
title — it’s in the process.

The reduplication rule

The two strongest machine-without-animal tracks share a feature worth
naming:

  • 08 beep beep computers
  • 09 talk talk machines

Both use doubled-syllable onomatopoeic verbs as the machine’s mode of
speech
. This is consistent with Colin’s broader reduplication operation
across motifs — shakeshakeshakeshakeshake, hopdanceshakebump on
dance / rave / groove — the floor as a song-engine, toby dance, DanceFloorPPLdropz. The
machine is given the same percussive-syllable treatment the dancing body
gets. Colin’s machines speak in dance vocabulary. That is probably
the cleanest single-line framing for the motif’s relationship to
dance / rave / groove — the floor as a song-engine.

Cross-motif overlaps

  • machine × animal-coinage: the entire robo + animal subregister.
See animal coinages — absurdist creature collisions op #2 (“Robot/machine fusion”) — the same
tracks anchor both pages, and the strongest single-line description of
the alphabets-era robos is “animal-coinage in mechanical costume.”
  • machine × dance-rave-groove: danceMCHN. The MCHN compression is
the machine motif’s most Killd-By-typography-shaped surface.
  • machine × howl: robodogs nighttime cage howls, robo goats howl and bang. The robot is given Colin’s signature animal-call.
  • machine × body / sweat: bloodsweat&ice robovoicesamps
    production-level robotization of a body-fluid title.
  • machine × cosmic-ghost: DEC09SCIFI (the release container of
    robodogs nighttime cage howls) is itself a machine-adjacent label;
    18 alphabets/robot.png sits inside the same alphabets-meets-sci-fi
imaginary as Colin’s “alien safari rainforest style” self-description
on stars / ghosts / aliens / cosmic-spiritual / animal coinages — absurdist creature collisions.
  • machine × architecture: chrome hallways (JANFEB09), cyberslum
(KB Recovery). The motif is one of the few that consistently puts the
music inside a built setting — caves and venues do similar work for
dance / rave / groove — the floor as a song-engine, but the machine motif’s settings are
    reliably interior, metallic, and dystopian-urban.

The robo → cyber shift

The clearest time-axis story in this motif is the vocabulary swap
across the alphabets → Killd By transition. Across roughly 2015,
robo- (warm, cartoonish, animal-attached, child-book-typography) drops
out, and cyber- (cold, urban, place-attached, dystopian-typography)
moves in. The transition is mechanical-vocabulary at the surface, but
underneath it tracks the same shift visible in body — Bliss Body, body-coinages, the body as ecosystem (where
the alphabets era’s exterior animals — bliss body, gembones — give
way to Killd By’s interior-fluids register: cameras in my body,
river_inside, draw blood) and in dance / rave / groove — the floor as a song-engine
(where DDR’s arcade reference deepens into DanceFloorPPLdropz
late-rave bleakness). Three motifs now show the same sharpening in the
same period; that consistency is itself a finding worth capturing.

Notes for future passes

  • Lyric file deep-pass on cyberslum. Two RTFs (cyberslumlyrics.rtf
and cyber sLum take it back .rtf) exist as lyrics, not just
titles — rare for Colin. A reading of those lyrics could turn the
cyberslum from a 3-file motif anchor into a properly scoped Killd By
release stub. RTF reads have been intermittently blocked by
Dropbox-mount lock contention this session; flag for a retry pass.
  • bloodsweat&ice track-level entry. The robovoicesamps technique
is interesting enough that the underlying track deserves a proper
tracks/ entry; right now it’s only documented through this motif and
    through sweat / sweatbee.
  • Adjacent candidate motif: weather / storm / sky. Already on
Session 15’s carry-forward list. The machine motif has no weather
overlap to report (the chrome hallways and cyberslums are reliably
interior), which is itself a useful framing for the weather page when
    it’s written.
  • Adjacent candidate motif: kid / youth / play. Also on Session
15’s list. The robot.png cover art and the children’s-book-robot
feel of robodogs/robo goats suggest weather may be less imminent than
kid/youth/play as the next motif candidate.
  • talk talk machines / beep beep computers reduplication-rule
    applied retroactively.
The reduplication observation here might be
worth backporting onto the dance/rave/groove page’s op #2
(body-action stacking) as a sister-rule. Not urgent — both pages
    cross-link to each other already.
