The most cross-cutting motif in Colin’s catalog. Stars, ghosts, aliens,
soul, dream-life, temple — Colin’s spiritual/cosmic vocabulary appears in
every era from the earliest 2007/2008 archives through the CAVE RAVE 2014
peak.

Reading

Three overlapping vocabularies sit inside this motif:

  1. Stars / cosmic — “shooting stars”, “oh my stars”, “starfish”,
    “starfield” — wide-sky, distance, scale.
  2. Ghosts / haunting — “ghost face”, “ghost bumps”, “djtobyghost”,
    “tennis ghost”, DDR2_HAUNTED — playful-spooky, slightly funny,
    kid-coded (“don’t take it seriously, I’m a little kid” appears as a
    release title).
  3. Aliens / dreams / soul — “alien 1”, “alien 2 blue”, “dream life”,
    “soul music” — the alien-safari-rainforest-style self-description
Colin gave Bandcamp Daily fits here.

These three vocabularies don’t separate cleanly in Colin’s titles —
“maywolves hum and talk with shooting stars in the background” stitches
ghost (talking wolves) + stars + sound into a single image. That’s the
characteristic move of this motif: collapsing scientific, mythic, and
animal registers into one absurdist image.

Notes for future passes

  • This motif is the strongest candidate for a website “vocabulary tour”
page — it’s where Colin’s voice is most distinctive and most consistently
    visible across his run.
  • The DDR2_HAUNTED entry connects this motif to the fragmentary class
(it’s a singleton folder with one surviving track). Worth flagging that
the lost DDR2 sessions almost certainly contained more cosmic/ghost
    material.
  • Colin’s own descriptor “alien safari rainforest style” sits at the
intersection of this motif and the animal-coinage motif — the two
may need to share a “see also” reference.
