The founding volume of the underwaters series. Establishes the aquatic taxonomy that Colin would develop across five more volumes: sea creatures rendered in surreal, affectionate combinations — swimmer mammoths, blingbling mermaids, ballet starfish. The naming style is distinctly alphabets: lowercase, compound, mixing the archaic (mammoths) with the contemporary (blingbling).
Radio sink slow and lakey pearrs add a warped domesticity to the oceanic cast. The series begins understated relative to later volumes.
