Project: alphabets
Series: Album a Month — Month 6
Release date: June 2009
Archive location: _Documentation/Music/alphabets/JUNE_MONSTERS_09
Tracks: 15
Format: M4A

The first fully themed album in the alphabets catalog. Every track follows the format: [adjective/type] monster(s) [action/description]. No exceptions. June 2009 was when Colin locked into theme as an organizing principle — a practice he’d develop through the underwaters series, the POWER family, and ultimately through JANFEB11 PIRATE LIFE.

The monsters here are elemental: sunlight monsters, glitter monsters, garden monsters, tribal monsters, cave monsters, mud monsters. Each pair of words creates a small scene — “mud monsters night swamp sludge ballad” is a genre description and a movie title and a song description all at once.

“rory dog monster sleeps forever” closes the album with a name — Rory — which makes this track personal in a way the others aren’t. Whether Rory was a dog, a person, a character, or something else is unresolved.

Track 09 appears twice in the archive (both “power monsters work out fitness” and “glam monsters shift the pounce”), suggesting a revision or version conflict. Both tracks are included in the count.

Archive Notes

  • Format: M4A — last M4A-format album before the switch to MP3 in September 2009
  • Fully themed — the most disciplined thematic approach in the 2009 catalog
  • “Juni pears” in track 3: “juni” likely a phonetic spelling of “June” in German/Nordic, or a nickname; “pears” is a recurring word across the catalog
  • Track 05 missing from archive; may have been removed or unnumbered differently
  • “rory dog monster” — name “Rory” unresolved; possibly a personal reference
